Integrated Piper Aircraft Fuel Tank Restoration Process
- Utilization of Custom Tank Alignment Fixture
- Each fuel tank must be precisely reassembled to the exact specifications and alignment as when it was removed from the aircraft to insure proper fit upon reinstallation.
- Fuel Tank Disassembly Process
- Installation of fuel tank into working fixture.
- Fuel tank profile established and locked into fixture for eventual reassembly.
- Careful removal of fuel tank from alignment fixture.
- Inspection of fuel tank for damage, wear, and/or imperfections.
- Precision removal of all original rivets.
- Removal fuel gauges, drains, filler ports, vents, crossover fittings.
- Removal of old sealant in order to separate tank components.
- Removal of interior stiffeners and braces.
- Separate, inspect, and categorize all tank components.
- Painstakingly clean all aluminum surfaces of sealant and any original
remaining debris.
- Inspection and Replacement of Damaged and/or
Worn-out Components
- Fuel sensor repair or replacement.
- Inspection of fuel filler ports for proper material.
- Replacement of all galvanized steel parts with stainless steel upgrades.
- Customers will be notified of any discrepancies such as sending unit
overhaul, filler neck replacement, or other services resulting in extra cost.
- Fuel Tank Assembly Process
- Reinstall and seal interior components prior to final reconstruction.
- Braces and stiffeners
- Fuel ports
- Crossover fittings
- Fuel vents
- Mask off all surfaces required for precise reinstallation into aircraft.
- Install and position fuel tank into pre-aligned fixture.
- Seal and temporally assemble tank for alignment inspection.
- Systematically rivet tank together.
- Remove fuel tank from fixture
- Complete final riveting of original 26 fixture attachment points.
- All tanks are pressure tested to factory specifications before
shipping and/or reinstalling. Lead times are approximately
four weeks.
- Final Fuel Tank Sealing Process
- Remove of any excess sealant.
- Apply secondary bead of sealant on all exterior seams.
- Reinstall inspected, repaired, or replaced fuel sensors.
- Allow for the one-week sealant curing process.
- Fuel Tank Pressure Testing
- Re-inspect fuel tank after sealant has cured.
- Block all exterior ports and openings.
- Pressurize fuel tank to aircraft manufacturer specifications.
- Maintain and observe pressurization for 24 hours.
- Clear all ports and openings.
- Logbook recordation and reinstallation of fuel tank into aircraft.
